Katie Holmes was said to have been devastated after being turned down for a role in a new musical film.
The former 'Dawson's Creek' star married Tom Cruise last year and gave birth to a daughter named Suri.
She was apparently really eager to appear in the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway show 'Nine', but director Rob Marshall reportedly decided she that wasn't right for the role.
A source said, "Katie desperately wanted to be in 'Nine'. It would have taken her back to the singing and dancing she did when she was growing up. She thought working with Rob would be a career breakthrough. She was heartbroken when she didn't get the part".
The new project tells the story of the famous film director Guido Contini and the women in his life.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, who won an Oscar for her part in 'Chicago' has been cast as Guido's source of inspiration and Sophia Loren will play his mother.
Tom Cruise's ex-girlfriend Penelope Cruz will play his mistress.
Tom's ex-wife Nicole Kidman was also tipped to appear in the movie, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Renée Zellweger and Dame Judi Dench.
